First and foremost, Digital Okanagan is a community. A community of designers, developers & communicators who share passions for digital media, education, innovation & collaboration.
Events
Digital Okanagan organises the following events:
OKDG meetups – a free, casual environment for technology professionals and enthusiasts to socialize, share ideas and learn. And have a drink or two.
Lean Coffee – a peer group for startup founders. Attendees identify, discuss & action more efficient ways of conducting business while reducing waste. And have a drink or two (of coffee).
Startup Weekend - no ordinary event! Like-minded entrepreneurs gather for a weekend of company creation. In 54 hours, you take an initial idea from the Friday night pitches through to a mind spinning startup company on the Sunday night. Commencing March 2012 and (hopefully) becoming an annual event on Okanagan tech calendar. (Will also have opportunities for a drink or three).
2nd Thursday socials - irregular ‘after-5-meets-casual-tweetup-with-a-twist’ functions that get people out to new places, to meet new people and to catch up with friends & colleagues. And to have a drink or two. Or four.
#Geekbeers – very casual meetups for beers. Usually held every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month at 4.30 pm at Doc Willoughby’s Pub. Keep an eye on the #geekbeers hashtag on Twitter.
Organisation
The Digital Okanagan Association – as we are officially named, is a registered non-profit organisation and has a board made up of Shane Austin, Daryl Chymko, Cynthia Gunsinger, Mica Knibbs, Brent Lachman, Kazia Mullin & Richard Taylor.
But we don’t really like the word board – it sounds way too much like bored and not enough like fun! We prefer to think of the Digital Okanagan leadership team as a steering committee that coordinates various grass-roots initiatives and keeps an eye on the big picture.
We then have a bunch of working groups that get stuff done. These working groups are always looking for volunteers. If you’d like to help out, contact us.
Membership
At present, we don’t have an official membership program. But keep up to date with happenings by connecting with us on social media channels (see links in the sidebar), by signing up at the OKDG website or our Meetup Group; and by signing up to our mailing list (in the sidebar).
Sponsors
Digital Okanagan operates on an entirely volunteer basis and costs are usually met out of our board’s own pockets. We’d love to find some sponsors to enable us to put on better events and have a sustainable organisation. If you’d like to contribute & make a difference please contact us. We’ll be very grateful. Will make sure you get lots of publicity. And might even buy you a drink.
